I agree with all your pics – I loved Gigi’s dress and Claire Danes was stunning! I’m all for creativity but frankly a lot of the dresses were just ridulous and I was totally embarrassed for Amy S:(.

The last time I visited the Costume area was to see dresses and other outfits of the Civil War Era and to the pre WWI Era.
The small gallery had magazine articles and pictures if the Gibson Girl and some Life magazine artist depicting that Girl in the changing role of women. Some of those women wore clothes to say’ look at me’ — any press is better than no press. I like others here do not consider the K’s fashion icons — more like provocateurs.

Dear Chris, I’m not sure if they would know what the word means.

I don’t want to say anything mean about any specific people. However, I am disappointed that this glamorous event has become an opportunity to out-skin each other. Once upon a time, people dressed for the theater. Now thigh-high boots, bikini-cut hot pants, and sheer “see my privates” garb has taken over. It is disrespectful to the performers. I dress in a way that models modesty to my adolescent students, yet still looks fashionable and classic.

It looked more like either an S&M costume gig or a Halloween party honoring all the no-talent lackluster’s who dress in this to prove to one another they have made it. They would have looked right at home in a public school or movie theater wielding weapons to create mass mayhem. The looks are frightening, like most of their work nowadays which they call art.

Louis, we come from a different time. A time that no longer exists. The Met Gala was, always, beautifully presented and the attendees were not required to arrive in costume. We had true socialites that supported the Met. Truman Capote’s glorious swans, Babe Paley, Austine Hearst, Nan Kempner, Pat Buckley, Gloria Guiness, Marcella Angelli, Mrs. Whitney, etc. Beautifully dressed females. That social sphere no longer exists. As we both know Mrs. Vreeland was as imperial as Anna. In fact, Mrs. Vreeland saw to it for years that a Charles James exhibition was banned for as long as she lived. But the attendees, now are a mix of nothing, crass, without taste, manners or style. The fact that the “K” family is included only proves the loss of statue of this event. I could not believe at an event where all the gentlemen are required to appear in black tie, Kanye West arrived in torn denim and a bling denim jacket. It is a shame that he was not banned from entering. It is a lost age that we come from and I do long for those days. It is so true when you stated the cost of supporting the Costume Institute. I loved the fact that the after party was open for a nominal fee for all to attend, especially the design students! For me there was not one dress that I fell in love with, it wound up being which one was less offensive then the other. Thank you for letting me vent!

Cat, your comments about Kanye West and Kim Kardashian at last night’s Met Gala prompted me to look at their attire once again. Not that I hadn’t looked upon his outfit with some puzzlement and dismay, but I’m a masochist and wanted to flinch once more. Well, when I pulled up a photo of the couple, I found his eyes piercing and BLUE. Are Kanye’s eyes really blue? I wondered. Could no believe I had never noticed that. Well, the feature I pulled up addressed his eyes. He wore blue contacts last night to complement the silver-and-blue look he and Kim were aiming to carry off. Too bad that initiative wasn’t put into shopping for a tux.

Goldie, it’s amazing! This is a woman who came to prominence by way of a sex tape! There are no words to describe Kayne! Amazing that blue contact lenses are a fashion accessory! I find both of them to be an embarrassment. Money does not buy class or refinement, two perfect examples! Sorry I am you take a second look!

I see the parade of photos every year and was just thinking of the excesses of it all. Why doesn’t everyone just wear a beautiful simple outfit (using the theme and ingenuity—what a concept!) and donate the cost of the EXCESSIVE dresses/outfits to the causes they supposedly care about. Just a thought……….guess I sound like a curmudgeon (sorry!!).

It really is a means to support the Met. They need huge donations each year to keep it going and to install new exhibits, so there is a good reason for the Gala. It’s just become a celebrity fest all dictated by Anna Wintour. When I used to go they sold after dinner tickets for $100 and it was open to anyone. Lots of design student used to come dressed in all kinds of outfits, but it was all fun. It’s gotten so serious……and restricted to who she thinks should be there……It’s become boring. Jac and I are members of the Met which anyone can be, We will go to see the exhibit when things quiet down.

I really liked the clean lines of Anna Ewers in Jason Wu. Also drawn to Doutzen Knoes in Balmain; Naomi Watts in Burberry; Fei Fei Sun in Getty; and would have liked a lot Gigi Hadid in Tommy Hilfiger if the bottom had not been sheer. For some reason, I like Kendall Jenner’s geometric look a lot. (I’ll shoot myself.) By the way, a couple names I listed above belong to souls I’d never heard of before today.

      Typo: Doutzen Kroes

Sorry, Ms. Kroes, but you are new to me.

should go back to the days before it became a “thing” and most had no idea there was even a Costume Institute, which I love to go and see. Now its a celeb yuck fest, but maybe this raises more money.

  9. Kate

I thought it was an especially challenging theme this year. Bee Shaffer in Alexander McQueen looked spectacular but she was not really hewing to the futurist theme. Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, and Amber Valletta looked great, but they’re former models! I think Emma Watson’s look was my favorite; I also really like Bree Larson, Naomi Watts, and Kristen Stewart. As for the worst Miuccia Prada, Madonna, and I agree about SJP.

Hi Louis, had to turn the E Special off…too ridiculous! They just loved everyone….let’s see what they say on the Fashion Police tonight…paging Joan Rivers.

Misty Copeland, Prime Ballerina stood out, she looked lovely, not like a trying -too- hard clown!
Miss the days of Nan Kempner, Pat Buckley etc who ran the show and dressed themselves and raised money for NYC charities.
Have some old copies of (the monthly) WWD when this was THE Party of the Year!

Also, I think the Costume Institute should have been named after Diana Vreeland, a true original!
Hope you and Jac had a few laughs at the photos.
Looking forward to seeing you next week. Elaine

Watching the E Special on the Met Gala now. So far my worst is Sarah Jessica Parker. So many outfits are overwhelming the celebrities, especially the young ones.

Like Olivia Wilde and Nicole Kidman.
