“THE BRICK RED D.B. SWING JACKET”

August 2014

………………………Since LABOR DAY is upon us, and many children start school next week…..for me….FALL has officially started…….It already feels like fall here in New England, and the hot temperatures are loosing out to cooler days and nights………..Many of you have already seen sneak peeks of this jacket….thank you gODFREAKo……….so I thought it would be the perfect garment to start off my September Sneak Peeks. If the predictions  about another brutally cold winter come true, this will be a perfect outerwear jacket to own. I have heard it referred to as a PEA JACKET, but it is not….that will be coming latter…Some of you lucky ones already own a very similar jacket to this I did a few years ago. It came in Black with big gold ball buttons. It was to be reordered, but once again there was difficulty getting the mill to remake the fabric….I think what actually happened, though I don’t know this as fact, was the mill sold the fabric at too low a price and refused to make it again knowing a reorder has to be kept at the same price…..so instead of upsetting the client, me, they just said they couldn’t remake it. If the original fabric can’t be purchased then the reorder is killed. I have seen many similar fabrics to that original one…. so that is what I surmise happened., but it’s just a guess…………………..That’s the history of the previous jacket….now for my new version of the …… DOUBLE BREASTED “SWING”. The silhouette is almost identical to the original with some tweaks……….This does not have the breast flap with the button, but the back flap and button plus the inverted pleat remain. This jacket is slightly longer measuring approx. 28 inches from the HPS [high point shoulder]. There are set in BAND POCKETS in the front, and sleeve straps with buttons on the long RAGLAN SLEEVES…….The buttons are the same style as the original, but slightly smaller. Whereas the original buttons were bright gold the buttons on each of the new colors are burnished or antiqued……….Above on the ………BRICK RED…….the buttons are GUNMETAL. The collar has a stand like a TRENCH COAT so it frames the face beautifully. The stand leaves room to tie a…..BRICK RED…. Whisper Knit scarf, A257914, under the neck to keep out the winter winds. The silhouette, as the original, has a swing or A-LINE shape….nothing exaggerated, just to give you some ADDED EASE WHEN SITTING DRIVING YOUR CAR…….perfect for my pears and apples…………The fabric has the same look as my ORIGINAL BOUCLE that many many of you own and love. It is much flatter and not as loopy as last years coat in the ruby, malachite and lapis. Of course this is a little heavier than the original boucle making it more of an OUTWEAR JACKET….This is a DRY CLEAN ONLY garment, and it should be…..really how many times do you dry clean an outwear garment?….If you’re like me…it’s once a season just before you store it away..The BRICK RED color is not as  bright a red as my photos would have you believe. No matter what I tried with the camera….it came out brighter and redder than it is. It is actually close to the A257280, short Brick Red jacket I sold in July, but this boucle came out a little redder and brighter than that due to the fiber content….45%rayon/28%wool/27%polyester…..so the jacket is 73% rayon and wool. It is fully lined in a beautiful DTM satin. This really is an every day jacket, because it will be so comfortable to wear, and as the weather gets colder you will have the room to layer for additional warmth. I have chosen to show the BRICK RED JACKET above simply with a pair of jeans which is the way many will wear it, but it looks equally good with a pair of pants or a skirt….short or long……..I think the only trouble you will have is…..which color????………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

    Dear Louis,
I just received the Red DB Swing jacket today. I absolutely love the fabric, and the color is just perfect! I’m a little concerned about the volume at the bottom as that is where I have more volume! What should I look for in the fit to make sure it is the correct size for me? Any suggestions you may have would be greatly appreciated. I did purchase the size I regularly buy. As usual, there is nothing out on the market like this one! Thanks for your expertise and designs!

Dear Wendy…the areas where the fit of this jacket are most important are the shoulders and the bust. You want to make sure you are comfortable and have maximum movement across the back and shoulders. You also want to make sure you have enough bust room so there is no pulling when the jacket is buttoned. Though this jacket is called a “swing” it is basically an A Line jacket and should give you room at the bottom where you say you have more volume. I would recommend wearing slimmer bottoms that are straight. You don’t want to wear an A Line top with an A Line bottom. Then it should be very flattering. I’m sure you will get lots of compliments

Thanks so much for your expert advice. I learn so much from your comments and styling!

Please, Louis could you show on your blog all the items offered for this fall so I can plan my purchases. You have become my “one and only” and this would help greatly. Have not yet seen the pea coat need to know which I prefer from the swing recently featured on your blog. Many thanks for all you do.

Dear Tricia…I can’t show ALL of the pieces, because it’s very time consuming and most of it hasn’t been photographed….The Sept show isn’t until the 29th

I do hope next Winter you could do a faux shearling coat…..OMG spectacular boot length!! $200 or so…see I’ve got it all figured out.:). I’ve been looking for one that’s not $5000 + of course! but there’s nothing pretty out there.

    1. Louis Dell'Olio

Dear Sharon….I haven’t done a faux shearling because I haven’t found a quality I like. Most are very cheap looking because they a re cheap quality. The ones I like are too expensive for QVC. I just can’t use these cheap qualities. Years ago, not that many, the qualities I liked were less expensive, but those qualities today are so expensive.

Thank you for your response. Nice to know you thought about one also.

I truly appreciate that you stick to your standards. We all benefit. And that’s why I have so much Linea in my house!

        1. Seka

I agree – 61% of Linea Items are Customer Top Rated! No other Q Vendor comes even remotely close to this percentage!

A red coat in the winter is an antidepressant: for one’s public! But I only wear bright red coats. Is the color in the photo true and is this as bright as it looks or more on the chili pepper side?

    1. Louis Dell'Olio

Dear Andrea…..the jacket is not a bright red as it appears in the photos….I would say it’s a cross between ruby from last fall and chili pepper…..closer to chili pepper, but a little redder. It is definitely not a Santa suit red.

      1. andrea

Thank you for your very exacting response. One of my favorite items is what I call my Dr.Zhivago topper. Santa red with gorgeous black embroidery. I like all your reds.

Hi, Louis. I know Jac was wearing the Pea Jacket (to come later) in Persian Blue—what other colors will that come jacket come in—need to make “purchasing plans” vis a vis the two coats.

I had the original of this D. B. swing jacket in Black, but sadly never wore it as I never got the sleeves shortened—and then, happily, I lost weight and it was too big. So, I sold it with the tags still on to another Linea Lover in Boston—and she just adores it and wore it all last Winter in Cambridge!

I’m going to have the same issue with the sleeves on this new one, too (but not your problem I have petite arms). It’s the banding on the lower sleeve that makes shortening it more complicated—but my new seamstress is quite good. Didn’t the banding on the original go all the way around?

I have the Ruby Boucle from last year, plus the Black Boucle Full Length Coat, A229477, and another Linea Black Boucle Jacket, A83991, so I need to go outside my normal gravitation to Blacks and Reds.

Finally, the new reversible suede coat will be mine no matter what—I know one color is Olive.

What a fabulous year this has been, Louis!

    All the best, Sheila/Sheesh

Black, Raspberry as the shawl and funnel sweater, and camel as last falls posh knit sweaters scarf and the pants that came in Camel and caviar. I don’t remember if the band went around the whole sleeve, but it doesn’t matter since it’s sewn into one seam….A descent seamstress………..I think you are a little confused….The olive suede jacket is not reversible it a regular jacket. The coat with faux fur is the reversible piece….one side is BLACK….the other side is my secret!

      1. Sheesh

Oh Lord—the three more jackets/coats to come after the DB Swing jacket–! Saints preserve us! Yes, I was definitely confused. Thanks for clearing it up.

I am going for the Raspberry in the Pea Jacket—already got the WK Shawl in Raspberry and on Waitlist for the Funnel Collar Sweater. This Raspberry is a great color—can we have it next year in a WK T-neck and V-Neck—pretty please! And what the heck—a WK pencil skirt, too, in Raspberry—I’m not greedy—much!

  6. Louis Dell'Olio

    What’s the confusion?….45%Rayon….28%Wool…..27%Polyester equals 100%

    1. Kate

This: “45%rayon/28%wool/27%polyester…..so the jacket is 73% rayon and wool” was the source of my ??

  7. Kate

Every woman needs a great red coat! I’m confused about the fabric content here…

    1. Cela

      Hi Kate,
73% Rayon and 27% wool. I think Louis is saying the higher the synthetic content, the more control you have over color, natural fibers sometimes have their own idea as to what color the garment turns out to be. I could be wrong, though.

      1. Louis Dell'Olio

No you’re right…..Wool and rayon absorb and take dyes much better than polyester….but that’s not for all synthetics or natural fibers…..Acrylic dyes beautifully while cotton can be flat.

        1. Cela

Yes, I have been very surprised to look at some acrylic sweaters to learn that they WEREN’T WOOL. Guess it’s been perfected.

I’m loving the blues and greens this year. Can’t wait to see if the Olive is the one we know and love or whether you’ve tweaked it a little.
