“THE FINEST HOURS”

Hi everyone …….Jac and I are still here in PA, and last night we went to the movies to see “The Finest Hours”. It stars Chis Pine. We absolutely LOVED it!….Jac informed me that the movie only got 2 1/2 stars, and the reviews weren’t good. Actually, the action scenes out at sea were highly acclaimed, and frankly I am surprised this movie wasn’t nominated for an Acadmy Award for the special effects which were incredible…..What the critics didn’t like was Chris Pine’s performance. Jac and I agreed that EVERYTHING the critics didn’t like we did. This is a true story that took place in the winter of 1952. If anyone knows older New Englanders, they would know they are somewhat old school, and keep their business to themselves and their emotions. We felt Pine’s portrayal of this hero was very real and true to who and how these people would have behaved and acted at that time. Since this is a true story and many of the people involved are still alive, I am sure research was done on the character of the people portrayed. We seldom make our decisions to see a movie or not by critics reviews. If we did we would have missed some wonderful movies. That said we highly recommend this movie, and decide for yourselves how many stars it deserves. I’m sure you all will enjoy it.

Having lived in Boston for many.many years I agree about New Englanders keeping stuff close to the vest. Glad you liked the movie and I’m looking forward to seeing it. Anxiously waiting for tomorrow’s shows.

Funny enough, Walter and I went to see The Finest Hours last night too 🙂 We also LOVED it. I find your take on Chris Pine’s performance much the same as ours; we thought he did a fine job. The actual hero of the story told someone he really was clueless and lucky during much of the rescue … modest I think! I need to find the book to read asap. We also loved Casey Afleck’s performance as the engineer on the tanker ship … understated, elegant and just right. I’d encourage anyone to see the movie as well. Side note: Theater was mostly empty as we went over the dinner hour … Perfectly Pink swing sweater and a pair of soft grey cotton velveteen jeans made for warm, cozy movie comfort 🙂

The theater was practically empty when we went to see it too. I hope the reviews don’t keep people away. A lot went into making that movie and to easily write if off that way is irresponsible……tonight we went to see “Room”. This is not an easy movie to watch, but I now understand why the actress is getting the rave reviews she’s getting. This one they got right, but how could they say anything else. I am pretty sure the Oscar is hers. The little boy was amazing.

    I’m looking forward to it.

    Thanks, Louis and Jac!
My husband is from Maine, read the book and loved it. He was quite disheartened to hear the negative reviews (he was looking forward to seeing it), but knowing what you said we will definitely see it this week. Yes, you are 1000% correct about New Englanders being stoic and not showing much emotion. I,on the other hand, am an emotional Brooklyn born gal!
I already ordered the jacket, looking forward to seeing both of you tomorrow.

Dear Judy…tell your husband he’s going to love it, and not to listen to the reviews….they didn’t get the subtlety of Chris Price’s performance ……..I guess they expected a lot of emoting, and that’s just not who the man was.
