Glad to hear that while shaken you are safe, but there seems to be a lot of damage to some historic buildings. I’ve been through a tornado in 2006, and that was terrifying so I can imagine how this was but much more sudden. A grandfather whom I sadly never knew in person is buried in the Napa Valley area, and I’d like to travel there someday. Praying that you all remain safe there.

My sympathy goes out to anyone who experiences a quake for the first time….it’s blood curdling. Having been born in CA. I’ve been through about three or four and I still wouldn’t live anywhere else. Not saying you ever get used to it, but it’s like giving birth, you forget about the pain when it’s over. But not all buildings have been retrofitted, earthquake insurance is sky high. For some reason, it usually happens early in the morning. I was taught the safe place would be under a desk, between door jams, where reinforcement is. But when you are laying in bed, paralyzed by fear, who can think of looking for a door jam? LOL

Everyone here is urged to do earth quake preparedness– water, batteries, flashlights, canned food, blankets, all tucked away for THE DAY, etc. You can get kits at Home Depot and places like that.

Hi Louis, What a welcome to California! I’ve only been living here 3 weeks when at 3:20 this morning I was roused from a dead sleep by all the doors in the house sounding like someone was trying to force them open them all at once. Immediately following that my bed began to vibrate, then started making a wave motion, while all the while it felt like a motor was running underneath. My very first earthquake and quite startling! My knees and neck turned to jelly and when it was over I could barely stand up. An interesting aside is that my dog wouldn’t come to bed last night. I keep trying to get her in the bedroom but she wouldn’t budge. Finally coerced her with a treat but she’s never done that before so I am wondering if she anticipated something amiss. After it was over I looked down at her and we made eye contact and I swear she gave me the equivalent of a doggy eye roll, like, see, I tried to tell you! We had plans to go to Napa today but obviously canceled those plans. I’m only about 20 miles away from downtown Napa so we got the full brunt of the quake. No damage thank goodness other than to my nervous system! Have been watching the news today and other than a lot of broken bottles and a few damaged cars I think people are well. Thanks for the well wishes and hugs! Jules

Welcome…indeed! That is scary. I’ve experienced one mild earthquake and that was enough for me. Glad to hear you didn’t have damage. Dogs always know….I think it’s got something to do with barometric pressure.

Jules, I cannot even imagine what went through your mind! I’m in a Chicago suburb and we experienced a very mild quake in the middle of the night a few years back. It sounded like a roar, then a slight vibration. But that woke me up, had no clue until morning on the news. There is mild quake activity near the southern border of IL. So glad everyone is ok.

Dear Louis, Jac, and Linea friends,

Thank you for all of your good thoughts and prayers. My husband and I live in Calistoga, which is a small community in the Upper Napa Valley. We felt the initial earthquake jolt a little after 3 a.m. this morning but none of the aftershocks, thank goodness. Most of the damage is in the town of Napa, which is about 30 miles south of us. A very dear friend of ours is a judge in Napa and the county courthouse there, which is a very old building, has serious damage. Please continue to pray for the injured and those that lost their homes and belongs.

I will send an update when I know more.

    Fondly,
    Dariann
