Christmas this year will be different for so many of us. Mostly because we are feeling isolated as we keep safe from Covid but also because life has thrown us a curveball whether it be due to divorce, death, loss, finances, etc. But we have to remember that life is good and we muster the courage to face another day, another season, another year because tomorrow is a new day and it is what WE make of it. Let’s count our blessings and look forward rather than backward.
I’ll be spending Christmas eating a steaming bowl soup while getting lost in my favorite Christmas movies – It’s a Wonderful Life (restores my faith in humanity and the goodness in people- I cry every time at the ending no matter how many times I’ve watched it!). The Shop Around the Corner and Miracle on 34th Street (1947) are fun to watch too. Blessing to you Louis and all of your friends.

We are also celebrating an austere Christmas together here and and our son and family in Baltimore remaining there for the safety of all. Our 6 year old grandson is having a difficult time of it as he is used to being here. He has, however, fallen in love with Dolly Parton and her new Christmas album! We also are in the habit of attending our beautiful and joyous Christmas Eve festival Eucharist at our Episcopal church here. We always end with candlelight, then followed by robust Christmas greetings to each other. This is not to be this year, and we are all experiencing a sense of loss.

But our now retired former rector, also a friend, sent this out to us. I will share his letter here. Excerpted: “And it occurred to me that, in a way, that is exactly what Christmas is about. The Feast of the Nativity, the commemoration of the birth of Jesus, is at its heart a celebration of the astonishing fact that the Word of God became human. For all the festivity that church tradition has attached to it over the centuries, the core of Christmas celebration is a kind of mute awe that the Second Person of the Trinity, who was “in the form of God,” as St Paul puts it in Philippians 2:6-7, “emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness.” Christmas is the humbling realization that the One who loved us so much that he came to be God With Us, came to redeem our lives from the inside out, was born in an animal shed and swaddled to sleep in a feeding trough. Christmas is our response to God’s self-emptying, God’s self-humbling, to share our lives so that we might share God’s love.

Is it not then appropriate, is it not the most appropriate, to humble our Christmas services, to empty our Christmas expectations, to scale back our Christmas festivities, in order to show love in the time of Covid-19? https://paulsnancarrow.wordpress.com/2020/12/06/christmas-and-kenosis/?fbclid=IwAR0UIpUUlG3aaIYCQ4bOGxD45RDYHd26W3_-LvcLUiwWcmv-lV1tcaEDIO8

Barbara, your pastor is very wise. We are often overwhelmed by the trappings of what the Christmas celebration has become instead of the simple humbling pleasure of enjoying and celebrating simply the birth of Christ. Now that we are forced to step back it allows us to reflect if we use the time wisely.

Yes, we really miss Paul+. He is back in Minnesota now but still keeps in touch. We are without a rector now, but our new rector will arrive in early January! We are all eager to meet him and his wife. And his dog!!!!

Merry Christmas, Louis! We just watched or service on Facebook live – distanced from most family and all friends. Next year will be grand! I dressed up in full Linea holiday clothing and jewelry. It feels good – like a big hug from my favorite designer! Thanks for the lovely view of the water!

Best wishes to you Louis, and all the Lovely Linea Ladies, from the West Coast / Oregon Wine Country! Wishing you good heath, good cheer and all the very best blessings! Of course, I will be wearing Linea at our tiny gathering. I bought myself a Christmas present of Jac’s garden scarf (turquoise) and the shirt in white….along with just a few other items. The flowers are gorgeous. I want to get another scarf as well. I too am a gardener but those flowers look even better than the real flowers I grow. Maybe I need to try harder. Take care!

Merry Christmas Louis and all the Linea Ladies!!!!

    Oh what a beautiful morning…..
Thanks for sharing. I will be spending Christmas Eve with fresh cracked crab, sourdough bread, a good glass of vino and season 3 of Mrs. Maisel instead of my family (we are being very covid safe). Hovever, I know I will be surrounded by love, just as you are Louis.

Hi Louis, Nothing like a sunrise view like that! I always loved the early morning walks on the beach when on vacation in the Outer
Banks of NC. You’ve got a beautiful waterfront. Have you ever fished from here? I’m a catch and release Fisher myself but it’s really just an excuse to spend inordinate time at the water’s edge. It is a good place and time to decompress and rejuvinate. Sending happy thoughts your way this Merry Christmas!

    1. Louis Dell'Olio

Dear PC, I’m not a fisherman, but Lou and a friend have fished here. I don’t think they every caught anything, but I have seen people catch fish down here.

Louis, Your Zen-like morning view has set a welcome tone for the day before midnight Mass and Christmas Day. Peace, Health and Safety to you an yours.

    1. Louis Dell'Olio

Oh I wish the midnight mass was open, but they are not. Jac and I used to go to the candle lit Mass. It was at the Episcopal Church and the singing was beautiful.

Good Morning, Louis! And happy Christmas Eve morning! Thank you for the sounds of the sea and a gorgeous view. It’s a chilly morning here in Northern California with a heavy morning mist hugging the ground and trees. I put on my new black Linea ponte pants, new black turtleneck sweater and tobacco composition jacket. I’m feeling cozy and getting ready to start on mashed potatoes and stuffing to be baked tomorrow for dinner for two. Wishing you blessings today and throughout the New Year!

  14. Irene

Thank you Louis for such a beautiful, peaceful way to start the day !
Christmas blessings to you and your family !

A peaceful scene for this Christmas Eve morning!
    Thank you Louis, Elaine

Happy Christmas Eve morning to you too! Looking at the sun in your video is a reminder that as of December 21 our days are getting longer. That is a good thing.
We are celebrating Christmas in the Highlands of North Carolina with another couple. It is pouring rain here-good fireplace weather. And, in Door County Wisconsin, a beautiful Scandinavian settled/New England type vacation area, we received our first few inches of snow. Let winter begin!
