Thank You so much for the cookie press tip!

I bought 3 of the Mirro cookie presses on e-Bay. I will keep 2 and give one to my sister. They are the ones from years ago. They are exactly like the ones my mother had that she used to make cookies that I still make now. I remember it was the only one she used. When that finally broke, we tried every cookie press we could find. Nothing ever worked. The cookies are not the important part for me…it’s bringing my mother back into my kitchen. I lost her a while back and I love to remember all the warmth of her kitchen and the good times we always had baking. I can’t thank you enough. Merry Christmas…..Oh…Louie will be pressing…he is very good at that!

    Jac,

It was me, and I am delighted that you found the presses, and especially that you found a renewal of your forever bond with your mother. Memories of baking with mother truly are the sweetness of the holidays, and the sweets are just a happy bi-product of that.

Thank you, too, for taking the time to share your recipe. Do you ever dust the tops of your ginger cookies with powdered sugar? My mom served her crinkled ginger cookies half plain and half dusted, just for prettiness on the serving plate.

Jazzmom, I have that spritz recipe but I usually use the ones from ‘Swedish Baking,’ a cookbook published by the Swedish grocery cooperative ICA. Sandbakels are my favorite Christmas cookie.

Finally, if there are pictures of your holiday party ensembles that Louis told us about, I for one would love to see them!

      Hi MH-MN,
I have never personally dusted the cookies, but I think it would look very pretty. I do know the original recipe said that you can take the dough ball and, after rolling it in your palms, roll the ball lightly on a plate of granulated sugar. Then bake. I like your idea better. The crackles are what is nice to see.
Thanks so much again…I am awaiting my 3!!! presses……Jac

If you ever want to try the granulated sugar, IMO, pearl sugar is more festive. I’ve been baking the soft ginger cookies with crackles for about 50 years (Gold Medal recipe) and they don’t need gilding, do they? Yum. Happy baking!

I have the Wearever Super Shooter that my MIL gave me years ago (it was hers)and she hardly used it. I take it out every so many years to make spritz cookies. I make various flavors like chocolate orange, chocolate hazelnut, chocolate raspberry, lemon cardamom and pecan cinnamon spritz. Many years ago I found more discs for the shooter that another manufacturer made and was compatible with the Super Shooter (same diameter as the original ones). I can make numerous spritz cookies with these discs. My spritz original recipe comes from Land o Lakes Cookies book (now out of print). Its called Melt in Your Mouth Spritz.

What a sweet story. The old metal presses are unbeatable!
